NRNs host an International Hydropower and Green Energy Workshop

NRN Korea, Korea Chapter of Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and Society of Nepalese Students in Korea (SoNSiK) are jointly organizing the international workshop "Power Nepal 2009" in Seoul on July 31st, 2009 with an aim of bringing together the investors, engineers, scientists/ experts and policy makers in the field of hydro-power and energy development of Nepal. It is expected that the workshop will take a vital role in linking the energy experts from the two countries and eventually contributing to the economic development of Nepal. The Nepalese Embassy in Korea has supported the workshop. Nepal, as a matter of fact, is facing severe electricity crisis since Nepalese governments in past failed to establish strategic development of power resources in Nepal, despite availability of immense potential for commercially viable capacity of 42,000MW hydropower. The situation has seriously affected the Nepalese economy and it is anticipated that this situation will continue for significant span of time. More than 60% of the total Nepalese population still has no access of electricity. Under such circumstances, speedy harnessing of the immense hydropower potential from the enormous water resources is highly required in order to solve the present crisis in long term and bring significant inflow of hydro-dollars into Nepal which would lead Nepal towards sustainable economic development. Apart from this, Nepal is lagging behind in exploring its potential on such renewable energy resources as solar power, wind power, biomass and the like in which Nepal can benefit from the provisions of clean development mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) or carbon funds being promoted by various organizations in order to obtain funding for new projects that reduce the green house gas emissions. The Government's plan of developing 10,000MW of hydropower in coming 10 years and the Nepal Electricity Crisis Mitigation Action Plan 2065 show government's commitment to power development in Nepal. Given the existing situation of hydropower development and the government's proactive policies, there is growing interest of Korean investors and project developers in power development in Nepal. Hyundai's successful completion of Modi Khola Hydroelectric Project (15 MW) has been followed by a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) made by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Nepal Electrical Authority (NEA) to develop 42MW in Upper Modi Khola Project in Nepal. Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. Ltd. is going to start construction of 30MW Chameliya Hydroelectric Project in Nepal. Korea's recently launched "Low Carbon, Green Growth" policy which combines long-term strategies to enhance growth through "green strategy" and short-term efforts to create jobs and revitalize its economy can be an inspiring roadmap for Nepal to adopt a strategy for green growth through power development, in a situation when the "low-carbon green growth" strategy has been established as a paradigm for the international community. "Power Nepal 2009 will, be a wonderful platform for investors, engineers, scientists/experts and policy makers in the field of hydro-power and energy development of Nepal, linking the energy experts from Korea and Nepal," according to Er. Tenzi Sherpa, Coordinator of the workshop and member of International Coordination Council of Non Resident Nepalese Association (NRNA).
